Hill House gave everything one could ask for in a Gothic horror story. There was a scary manor owned by an old family, along with the Sanderson family inheriting it after the death of the Crain family, odd noises in the middle of the night creating which were unexplained as to whether the protagonist, Eleanor, was creating them in her head, and the seclusion from the public sphere.
It is my personal belief that the ending of the novel produced a supernatural ending. Eleanor was possessed by some spirit. Proof of this lies in understanding the change of Eleanor's character as the amount of time she spent in Hill House increased. We understand that Eleanor was subjected to supernatural phenomena after her father's death, and that is when she first made contact with the poltergeist which would take over her body.
When she got to Hill House, it was only loud noises and the giggling from the being. After this incident, the bond between the four residents of Hill House strengthened. However, Eleanor's personality changed drastically as the poltergeist attached itself more to her self, this symbolized by the writing of her name. She became more self-conscious about herself, always questioning whether the others were talking about her behind her back. The being became stronger, as it destroyed Theodora's room with blood and the rewriting of Eleanor's name.
At the end of the story, Eleanor is running rampant throughout Hill House. Right before she crashed the car into the tree, she had a sudden clairvoyance. "Why am I doing this? Why am I doing this?" (Jackson 182) This shows how dominant the poltergeist was over Eleanor's mind.
(And on a side note, I forgot this was due at noon)
