To let the reader know, I prepared my reading of H. P. Lovecrafts, "The Rats in the Walls" as any normal person would not do...I read it late at night, with most lights off, my door shut, and with the windows open. I did this mainly because I wanted to get that "extra" affect that scary stories have when reading it alone, late at night. Anyways, reading through the story, slowly and thoroughly, I felt a great tension and uneasiness that crept up on me; and I would only notice these things when I would have slight jerks in my body, that scared me 10x more than it needed to. The elements that followed which pointed that this was no ordinary house, built up with such suspense...I leaped when my grandmother came in to say goodnight.
My thoughts on the short story was simply, it scared me; it was horrifyingly great. To me, the most interesting part about the story was the ending. It really surprised me, while under my covers trying to read the last two pages, I still felt like the story was not over. For I knew, that house had still existed, in the story at least. It was really my favorite part about the whole story. I have had experiences with "haunted houses" and the influence it had upon Mr. Delapoer, unknowingly, really affected me. I believe in an evil aura about certain houses, and the fact that it had such a profound influence already, is not far from any truth in my book. But it's what made the story that much better! I was creeped out, and could not go to sleep that night. Worth my time reading.
But the scariest part was when Mr. Delapoer repeated the words he apparently said when they found him hunched over Capt. Norrys's body. With that said, I think this short story would be considered more of the Fantastic-Supernatural; mainly because it's not quite Supernatural reality. However, what was seen by the people in the story, couldn't be explained by nothing short of something...well, supernatural.
