Many sci-fi movies and books nowadays play on the fear of the uncanny. Human have not yet been able to create a robot or machine that can trick a human into believing that it is also human, and the fact that these automatons act so human-like - but have small ticks that tip us off - is really off-putting and causes fear.
Why? I think it has something to do with the idea that these automatons may surpass and defeat the human race, as many post-apocalyptic movies portray. There is also the feeling that their movement - both like and unlike that of a natural human being - sets off a warning in our minds that this "thing" may have some sort of sickness or disease, and that is why it moving so strangely. Innate sense tells us to stay away, lest we also contract this disease.
