“Fair Game” and “The Father-Thing” were the two
stories that stood out to me the most. What I liked about “Fair Game” was that
the ending was not predictable. I thought it was interesting how at first,
Douglas doesn't like the idea of being observed by the big eye, but as the
story progresses, he accepts the idea because he thinks that he will be able to
live the same life he lives on Earth. I really liked the ending because it was
funny how Douglas thought he was going to be used for his intelligence, when in
reality, the text implies that he was only wanted as food.
I really enjoyed reading “The Father-Thing” because
there was a lot of uncertainty in the story that made me question what was real
and what wasn’t. The video we watched in class on Philip K. Dick’s life talked
about him having a twin sister who died six weeks after being born; being a twin
can be a reason why he wrote this story. I think it’s interesting how the story
is about not being able to determine who the “thing” is and who the real person
is. This could possibly relate to Philip K. Dick’s childhood as he grew up without his twin sister.
