Fear of the uncanny

Multiple sci-fi stories are hinged on the fear of the uncanny.   One of the most repeated themes in sci-fi stories is extremely intelligent robots that are capable of individual thought and motives.  I believe that this is manly due to the fear of our own fallibility.  We are currently engaged in an age where we are making technological advances at an extremely rapidly rate.  The common fear of our rapid advancement is not knowing when to stop.  This is expressed in novels as a robotic like creature who was created by humans but whose ultimate goal transforms into destroying human society.
