We Can Remember it for You Wholsale

"We Remember it for You Wholsale" by Philip K. Dick was my favorite story we've read so far. I really enjoyed reading the almost cinematic style of Philip K. Dick. The way the story is told, starting almost like an adventure piece and working its way through revelation after revelation, made it really easy for me to picture it in my head as if I was watching a movie. I think this is why there are so many movies based on this author works. There are two based on this story alone. ("Total Recall" (1990) and the reboot in 2012).
The theme of the story that struck me the most was that of identity. I think we can all relate to Douglas in a sense. Everyone has that one big dream that we wish we could accomplish and would give anything to see it become true. For Douglas, however, that dream had come true a long time ago, he just did not remember. After gaining back his memories Douglas' identity is shaken. He goes from being a regular husband with a lousy job to pretty much James Bond. I think that idea also reflects a common concern of people, that of discovering who we are and what we are meant to do in this world. For Douglas, in the end, it was to be alive (and save the world).
